The impressive art deco Batavia building is an old trading office from 1920, and is a listed building. Designed for the N.V Batavia Arak Society by the architect J.H Slot it was built to compliment the Amsterdam style of architecture.
In 2008 the café opened in its current format after a 16 month long renovation. Great care has been taken to keep the buildings original feel and style especially in the main bar, as can be seen in the wall panelling, doors and art deco lighting.
The building has two other rooms that are used for functions and as one of Amsterdams only remaining smoking rooms
